Ancestor 73
Ancestor 73 is a contemporary dance work that dives into the world of the Southern Resident Orcas of the Pacific Northwest. As the first ancestors and important spiritual leaders to many First Nations people on the west coast of "British Columbia", orcas are held to a high regard not only by Indigenous communities, but also in the mainstream culture of the West Coast. Endangered and up against human impacts like noise pollution, lowering food sources (chinook salmon), and water pollution, the scientific community has taken a special interest in the Southern Residents (the most studied ecotype of orca on the planet). Although conservation efforts are being made, the number of orcas keeps dropping. The predecessor to Ancestor 73, titled Ancestor 74, demonstrates the urgency of this issue, with the 2022 Southern Resident consensus listing only 73 orcas; a member less in only a few months. From Ancestor 74 to Ancestor 73, this piece urges the audience to see into the sophisticated, supernatural, and magical world of orcas, while bringing to light the realities of the human destruction of the earth, our shared home.
